Shared Solar on O'ahu

We are seeking community input regarding a solar project being submitted to the HECO on Oʻahu. If awarded, this project will provide local, clean energy to residents, businesses, and income-qualified households across the island.

Shared solar, also called Community Based Renewable Energy (CBRE), is a program where customers can subscribe to participate in solar energy projects and receive solar bill credits, reducing the cost of their electric bills.

This project will provide clean, renewable energy and guaranteed savings to more than 1,000 households as well as income-qualified participants and local businesses.

The project is located on a parcel owned by the Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL) in Kalaeloa, O‘ahu, near the Kalaeloa airport. This parcel is also called Kalaeloa Home Lands Solar (KHLS). The land site is outlined within the yellow border in the image to the right. DHHL is a strong supporter of this project as it is intended to provide preference to its beneficiaries. At a size of approximately 7 megawatts (MWdc), this project allows more than 1,000 households to subscribe to clean, renewable energy. By delivering solar energy to the utility's grid, the project aims to offset residents’ and organizations' reliance on fossil fuels.

Based on the archaeological, cultural, and field studies conducted, the Hawai'i State Historic Preservation Division has approved this project. The project is not expected to have any impact on cultural activities, archaeological, or natural resources. However, we welcome comments from residents in the surrounding communities.
